Day 1: Transfer to DR Congo
On the first day of 3 days Nyiragongo hike from Kigali, our English speaking driver guide will pick you up from your hotel or Kigali international airport. He will brief you about the journey and the whole safari and if there is time you will go for Kigali city tour before starting on your journey to DR Congo. During the Kigali city tour, you will visit the main market, Kigali genocide memorial as well as art and craft shops.
After the Kigali city tour, you will start on your journey to Lake Kivu where you will cross to DR Congo using Goma border and during the long journey, you will have stunning views of hills, plantations, homesteads, towns, and much more. On reaching the border, you will be handed over to the Virunga national park authorities who will give you a military convoy to transfer you to the lodge where you will have dinner and an overnight stay as you wait to hike Nyiragongo the next day.

Day 2: Nyiragongo Hike
On the second day of 3 days Nyiragongo hike from Kigali, you will wake up to morning breakfast, get your packed lunch and move to the safari vehicle. You will be transported to Katabi ranger post where you will present your hiking permit and be part of the briefing. During the briefing, you will be taught about the rules and regulations of the hiking activity and then armed ranger guides will lead you through the whole hiking exercise.
Hiking mountain Nyiragongo takes 4-5 hours depending on the fitness of the hikers and as you hike you will go through different vegetation covers, see different mammals, primates, and bird species. The vegetation on this volcano is not much because it was destroyed by the hot lava in the previous eruption.
At the summit of Nyiragongo volcano is a lava lake that’s is always boiling with a red glow from crusted lava. You will also have an aerial view of Virunga national park, mountain Rwenzori, most of the Virunga Mountains, Lake Kivu, Kahuzi Biega national park, and Goma city. After enjoying the summit of mountain Nyiragongo you will spend your night at the summit in cabins.

Day 3: Descend Nyiragongo and transfer to Kigali
On the third day of 3 days Nyiragongo hike from Kigali, you will wake up to the stunning views of the surroundings, have breakfast, and descend. At the starting point of the hike, you will meet a driver who will transfer you to the Goma border where you will again meet your safari driver guide to transfer you to Kigali city. If you never did the Kigali city tour on the first day, you can do it when you reach Kigali in time, and after you will be dropped off at your hotel or Kigali international airport.
